What is Chiropractic?
The word "chiropractic" is
taken from the Greek words "cheir" and "praktikis" meaning "done
by hand." It is a holistic health care method that uses adjustments of the spine and
other joints in the body for healing. It was developed by Dr. D. D. Palmer over 100 years
ago, in 1895. However, there are records of spinal adjustments being performed as far back
as 2700 BC during the Chinese Kong Fou period. The philosophy of chiropractic is that the
body has an "Innate" or inborn ability to heal itself, a philosophy also shared
by Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine.
What is a subluxation?
A subluxation is a misaligned bone or
vertebra, which causes a block to the proper movement of a joint in the body, and the
function of the nerves, blood and lymphatic vessels supplying the joint. It also affects
the function of the muscles and organs in the body supplied by those nerves and vessels.
I have heard that Chiropractors
"crack" bones. Is that true?
Chiropractors use their hands to
adjust, manipulate or move the bones around a joint, restoring normal motion and function
to the joint. During that process a "cracking" or "popping" sound is
sometimes heard as the bubbles of gas in the joint fluid burst following movement. The
adjustment aligns the bones of the joint and corrects the subluxation.
There are many methods of adjusting,
some of which use an instrument called an activator or a specially designed table. These
adjustments make no sound other than of the sound of the instrument or table being used.
